The new Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/4

Obtained from a Japanese website, it was mentioned that the new Nikon AF-S 70-200 f/4 will:

  • come with VRIII which allows shutter speeds to go as low as 5 stops (the current VR technology allows for up to 4 stops)
  • weigh 870g (the current 70-200 f/2.8 models weighs more than 1.5kg!)
  • ED elements and Nano Crystal coating
  • be priced at around retail price SGD$1700

This looks like a good alternative to the current f/2.8 model if the optics are up to par, considering that the weight is almost halved (!) and that it comes with newer VR technology. In view of that, it seems that the lens will be targetted at those who prefer less weight and do not need the f/2.8 for low light shooting (eg travel photographers) rather than the mass consumer/entry-level FX user.

Apart from the obvious weight and aperture, if will be interesting to see if there will be optical quality tweaks to differentiate between the 2 models considering the price gap.
